Report: Mavericks Likely to Sign Jermaine O’Neal

Thearon W. Henderson/Getty Images Sport(DALLAS, Tx.) — The Dallas Mavericks are inching closer to signing center Jermaine O’Neal.

The 36-year-old center, who is currently rehabilitating from numerous injuries and chronic ailments, is likely to join the Mavericks around the All-Star break, according to ESPN.

O’Neal, an 18 year veteran, last played in the 2013-2014 season with the Golden State Warriors. He has had multiple surgeries to repair both wrists and undergone plasma-rich therapy on both knees to alleviate tendinitis.

After acquiring Rajon Rondo from the Celtics on Dec. 18, the Mavericks are now seeking to add depth to their front line.

For his career, O’Neal has averaged 13.2 points per game and 7.2 rebounds per game.

Nowitzki Moves to 7th on Scoring List in Mavericks Win

NBA via Dallas Mavericks(DALLAS, Tx.) — With a three-point shot, Dirk Nowitski put away the Brooklyn Nets and passed Moses Malone for seventh on the NBA’s all-time scoring list.

Nowitski drained the three with 34.8 seconds left in overtime of Monday Night’s 96-88 win over the Nets.

“Yeah, it’s been insane, crazy ride in Year No. 17, and Moses was obviously an unbelievable player,” Nowitzki said. “So it has been a humbling experience to pass all these all-time greats. It’s a tribute to obviously the hard work, but all the great coaches and teammates that have gotten me to this point, and obviously staying healthy is a big part. I am proud of it but I am more proud that we got the win.”

Nowitzki passed Hakeem Olajuwon for ninth in November and now trails — in order — Kareem Abdul Jabbar, Karl Malone, Kobe Bryant, Michael Jordan, Wilt Chamberlain and Shaquille O’Neal.

Rondo Shines in Return to Boston

“Obviously, it was a special day,” Rondo said. “I’m emotionally tired. I’m physically tired, and I’m drained.”

Kobe Bryant Defends his Contract, says Players shouldn’t take Discounts

Chris Graythen/Getty Images(DALLAS) — With the losses piling up for the Los Angeles Lakers, many wonder why Kobe Bryant didn’t take a pay cut in order to help the team assemble a better roster. According to Bryant, he shouldn’t have to do that.

The 36-year-old Bryant signed a two-year extension with the Lakers prior to the start of last season worth $48.5 million. Even though some players like Tim Duncan and Dirk Nowitzki have agreed to below market value salaries for the good of the team, Bryant isn’t going for it.

“It’s the popular thing to do,” Bryant said. “The player takes less, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah. I think it’s a big coup for the owners to put players in situations where public perception puts pressure on them to take less money. Because if you don’t, then you get criticized for it.

“So did I take a discount? Yeah. Did I take as big a discount as some of you fans would want me to? No. Is it a big enough discount to help us be a contender? Yeah. So what we try to do is be in a situation where they take care of the player and the player takes care of the organization enough to put us in a championship predicament eventually.”

Heading into Saturday, the Lakers have the second-worst record in the Western Conference. Nowitzki’s Mavericks have third-best record in the West while Duncan’s Spurs won the NBA title last season.
