Chauncey Billups Announces Retirement

Andrew D. Bernstein/NBAE via Getty Images(NEW YORK) — The 2004 NBA Finals Most Valuable Player, Chauncey Billups, announced his retirement on Tuesday.

“It’s just time. I’m happy, excited. The game was very, very good to me,” Billups told Yahoo! Sports. “I felt like I was equally as good to the game the way I played it and the way I respected it and the way I carried myself through the process.”

Billups played 17 seasons in the NBA for seven different teams, including playing for the Detroit Pistons from 2002-08 and winning a title in 2004.

The 37-year-old averaged 15.2 points, 5.4 assists, and 2.9 rebounds per game throughout his career. Originally drafted by the Boston Celtics in 1997, Billups also played for the Pistons, Orlando Magic, Toronto Raptors, Minnesota Timberwolves, New York Knicks, and Los Angeles Clippers.

Billups rejoined the Pistons this past season, averaging 3.8 points and 1.5 rebounds in only 19 games.

Detroit announced in June that they would not be picking up his option for the 2014-15 season.

NBA Suspends Pistons F Greg Monroe For 2 Games

Ingram Publishing/Thinkstock(DETROIT) – Detroit Pistons forward Greg Monroe has been suspended for two games without pay by the NBA following his guilty plea to driving while visibly impaired. The suspension will begin at the start of the 2014-15 regular season.

“I take full responsibility for my actions and made a regrettable mistake,” Monroe said in a statement. “I apologize to my family, the Pistons’ organization, my teammates and fans. I will learn from this and continue my work to be a positive influence in the community.”

On Monday, Monroe signed a one-year qualifying offer with the Pistons. In four years with Detroit, Monroe has averaged 14 points, nine rebounds and 0.6 blocks per game.

“The organization is aware of the matter resulting in the NBA’s announced two-game suspension for Greg Monroe,” the Pistons said in a statement. “Greg has taken responsibility in a conscientious manner and resolved the matter with his representatives.”

Ronald Martinez/Getty Images(DETROIT) — Restricted free agent forward Greg Monroe signed a one-year, $5.5 million qualifying offer with the Detroit Pistons Friday, according to Yahoo! Sports’ Adrian Wojnarowski.

The stage is now set for Monroe to become a free agent next summer.

Report: Greg Monroe Will Sign Qualifying Offer with Pistons

Ronald Martinez/Getty Images(NEW YORK) — Greg Monroe is taking a gamble on himself. Jeff Zillgitt of USA Today reports the Detroit Pistons big man will sign his qualifying offer with the team and become a free agent next season.

Monroe and the Pistons were unable to come to an agreement on a new deal, so he will sign a $5.5 million qualifying offer for the 2014-2015 season.

Now a restricted free agent, Monroe will become an unrestricted free agent following this season.

The two sides have until October 1 to agree on a deal, or the two sides could work on a sign-and-trade during that time frame.

During his four-year NBA career, Monroe, 24, is one of the up-and-coming big men in the league today. This past season, he averaged 15.2 points and 9.3 rebounds per game.

There is a bit of a logjam in the Piston’s front court though. Along with Monroe, the Pistons also have center Andre Drummond and forward Josh Smith.

Pistons Hire Tim Hardaway as Assistant Coach

Christian Petersen/Getty Images(AUBURN HILLS, Mich.) — The Detroit Pistons added former NBA star Tim Hardaway to their bench as an assistant coach on Thursday.

The 13-year NBA veteran will bring leadership to a young team coached by Stan Van Gundy, who is also the team president.

“We are pleased to announce the addition of some quality people to our coaching and basketball operations staffs and the Detroit Pistons Organization,” Van Gundy said. “These are all highly-qualified individuals who bring a wide range of experience and will all play very important roles in helping to shape our vision.”

“Tim Hardaway informed us that he has accepted an assistant coaching position with the Detroit Pistons. [Owner] Micky [Arison] and I, and the entire organization, couldn’t be more thrilled for Tim as he embarks on the next chapter of his basketball career,” Miami Heat team president Pat Riley said.  “Tim was one of the cornerstones of this franchise for six seasons; providing excitement to fans in Miami and all over the country with his dazzling moves and killer crossover, and he has been a franchise pillar since the day he arrived in Miami. But most of all, he has been an important figure in the South Florida community.”

Hardaway made five All-Star teams and averaged 17.7 points, 8.2 assists, 3.3 rebounds and 1.7 steals in 867 career games.
